ORGANIZING MADD IN YOUR COMMUNITY
Who Should be Involved?
MADD is an organization of activists, dedicated to action that
will change society's attitude toward drinking and driving. The successful MADD
chapter involves many individuals who are committed and able to coordinate
chapter activities and serve victims on a daily basis. Persons with energy and
time, who have both empathy for victim issues and organizational abilities, are
needed. MADD is not made up of only mothers, but fathers, brothers, sisters,
friends, concerned citizens - any person determined to help MADD achieve its
mission.
What is a Chapter?
MADD, as a national non-profit corporation, charters local
chapters to achieve the organization's goals. A local chapter is an entity of
the national corporation and, as such, does not exist as an independent agent.
Chapter activities are conducted by local chapter members with elected officers
whose actions are directed and governed by the National Board of Directors. Each
chartered chapter shares in MADD's Internal Revenue Service 501(c)(3) tax-exempt
status and that status must be carefully protected.
ORGANIZING A CHAPTER
The purpose of a chapter is to create organized action that
promotes the mission of MADD within an approved boundary. There are three phases
in chapter organizing. Each phase requires approval by the MADD Louisiana state
office before proceeding to the next phase.
PHASE 1. APPLICATION
Complete
and return the application to organize with a summary of your experience
and/or resume that covers your background. The application will be reviewed and,
upon approval, you will receive the next phase.
PHASE 2. RESEARCH
MADD requires that organizers research and understand the
problems and issues involved with drunk driving that exist nationwide, including
state and local jurisdictions. The research includes questions regarding drunk
driving and general questions about MADD as an organization. The purpose is to
prepare and educate the organizers so they can be knowledgeable spokespersons
for MADD. The organizing group must recruit a minimum of 20 voting members
during this phase. All membership fees and donations on appropriate membership
reporting forms are to be forwarded to the MADD, Louisiana state office to be
held in escrow until the charter is issued.
PHASE 3. ELECTIONS
After verification that the research has been completed and a
minimum of 20 voting members have been recruited, the group will conduct its
first organizing meeting to elect officers. Officers must adopt MADD's articles
of incorporation, by-laws and policies.
When evidence of these three completed phases has been
submitted and approved by MADD, Louisiana's state office, a charter will be
issued for the new chapter.
